YOUNGWOOD, Pa. - Led by doubles-doubles by Hanna Hempfield and Mackenzie Markle, the Westmoreland County Community College women's basketball team claimed a 47-38 victory over Northern Virginia CC Saturday afternoon.
Markle paced the Wolfpack to a 20-17 lead at halftime. She posted 13 points by the break, including nine in the second quarter and her two scores in the final 80 seconds of the half gave the home team the advantage at intermission.
The second half did see Markle score six points in the third quarter, as Westmoreland extended their lead to 36-27 going into the fourth quarter, but Hempfield also started to heat up. She had eight points in the third period and added six more in the fourth, while Mya Johnson and Julea Claycomb scored big baskets in the final quarter as the Wolfpack held on for the win.
Hempfield and Markle both recorded double-doubles, as Hempfield posted 19 points, 12 rebounds an six assists and Markle finished with 19 points, 10 boards and five blocks. It was a huge night on the glass for the Wolfpack, as Claycomb hauled down 17 rebounds to go with seven points and Johnson grabbed 10 boards.
The Wolfpack will be back on the floor Thursday with a home game against Hocking College, which is scheduled to tip off at 5:30 pm.
