Wolfpack Earns DH Split at Allegany
CUMBERLAND, Md. - Three home runs and a strong starting pitching effort from Logan Gustafson lifted the Westmoreland County Community College baseball team to a 7-5 victory over Allegany College (Md.) in game one of their doubleheader Sunday afternoon.
The Trojans came back in the second game to post a 15-5 win that was stopped after five innings, putting the Wolfpack's record at 1-3 after the split.
Westmoreland wasted no time grabbing the lead, scoring five times in the first inning. Allegany chipped away to get within 5-4, but the Wolfpack scored a pair in the top of the seventh and then held off a Trojan rally in the seventh, as Matt Wicker recorded the final out to nail down the win and a save.
Pacing the offense was Noah Sweeney and Tommy Kegerreis, who both had two hits, including a solo home run each. The third Wolfpack bomb was hit by Dom Koch, a two-run shot. Also collecting two hits and driving in a run each was Sebastien Nelson and Matt Henderson.
Earning the win on the mound was Gustafson. He logged five and a third innings and gave up three earned runs and struck out three to earn his first collegiate win. Wicker threw the final 1 2/3 innings and recorded three Ks.
In the second game, it was Allegany who struck for five runs in the first inning and they built a 14-0 lead after three innings. Westmoreland extended the game with five runs in the fifth, but the home team finished the contest with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
With the bats, Nick Fuentes hit a double and drove in two, while Wicker had an RBI double and Sweeney and Nelson both had RBI singles.
The Wolfpack are scheduled to return to action next Saturday with a road twinbill at NJCAA Division II foe CCBC-Catonsville, with first pitch scheduled for 12 pm.
