Potomac Rally Leads to Sweep over Wolfpack
KEYSER, W.Va. - The Westmoreland County Community College baseball team led Potomac State throughout game two of Tuesday's twinbill, but a furious Catamounts rally was capped by a bases-loaded hit batter in the eighth inning for an 11-10 Potomac win that completed their sweep of the Wolfpack.
Westmoreland streaked out to a 6-0 lead in the nightcap, which started in the first inning with an RBI double from Matt Wicker and RBI single by Reid Amundson. In the second inning, Caleb Kastronis scored on a passed ball and in the third inning, Wicker belted a solo homer and Dom Koch and Sebastien Nelson ripped RBI doubles.
Potomac scored their initial run in the third inning, but that was answered by a three-spot from the Wolfpack in the fourth thanks to a double from Noah Sweeney that scored two and another RBI single from Amundson. The Westmoreland lead stood at 9-1 into the sixth inning when the Catamounts roared back with seven runs to get within one at 9-8 going into the seventh frame.
The Wolfpack added an insurance run in the seventh inning on an RBI double from Kastronis. In the bottom of the inning, a one-out walk was followed by a lineout, leaving the Wolfpack one out from the win. But the Catamounts pushed the game into extra innings with a two-out, two-run home run to left to tie the score at 10-10.
In the eighth, Westmoreland loaded the bases with two outs, but a strikeout ended the threat. Potomac would also load the bases in their half of the eighth with no outs and a hit batter ended the game and gave the home team the come-from-behind victory.
Pacing the offense for the Wolfpack was Wicker with two hits, including the homer, two RBIs and three runs scored, while Amundson also had two hits, two RBIs, scored twice and drew two walks. Matt Henderson had a solid start on the hill, throwing four innings and striking out five.
The game two thriller followed a 9-1 Potomac win in the opening game. The Catamounts took the lead with two runs in the first and led the rest of the way. The lone Wolfpack run scored in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Koch. It was one of two hits for Westmoreland in the game, with the other being an Amundson double. The game one starter on the mound was Damian Serralta, who threw 3 2/3 innings and struck out six.
Westmoreland will be back on the road on Friday when it travels to Allegany (Md.) College for a 12 pm doubleheader. The teams split a twinbill on March 14, with the Wolfpack winning the openr 7-5 and the Trojans taking game two by a 15-5 count.
