Wolfpack Fall in Twinbill to Allegany
YOUNGWOOD, Pa. - The Westmoreland County Community College baseball team battled back from four deficits in game one against Allegany College (Md.) Wednesday, but the Trojans finally managed to put away a 14-12 win in 11 innings over the Wolfpack.
Allegany made it a sweep for the day when they won the second game 15-0 in five innings.
In the opening game, the Trojans took a 5-0 lead after two innings and led 6-2 going into the sixth frame before the Wolfpack roared back to force extra innings. Westmoreland struck for three runs in the fifth inning thanks to an RBI ground out by Sebastien Nelson, an RBI single by Reid Amundson and bases-loaded walk by Logan Gustafson. The tying run scored in the seventh inning when Amundson smacked an RBI double.
Neither team scored in the eighth, but the game really got wild starting in the ninth. Allegany scored three times in the top of the inning, only to be answered by a trio of runs by Westmoreland in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Nick Fuentes, an RBI single by Matt Henderson and a throwing error. After the Trojans regained the lead in the 10th on a sacrifice fly, Westmoreland evened the score at 10-10 on a sac fly by Dom Koch.
Allegany pushed four runs across in the top of the 11th, but the Wolfpack mounted one more rally. Fuentes cut the defict in half by launching a two-run homer to left. Then two singles and a walk loaded the bases with two outs, but a sharply hit ground ball led to the final out and the visitors escaped with the win.
Fuentes reached base four times in the game, going 2-for-3 with the homer and two RBIs and also drew two walks. Henderson and Amundson both had a pair of hits and two RBIs, while Matt Wicker posted two hits and Gustafson knocked in a pair.
The nightcap belonged to Allegany from the start, as they scored nine runs in the second and added on to end the game early. Westmoreland was limited to only four hits in the game, including a double by Caden Kastronis.
The Wolfpack return to action Friday afternoon with a home doubleheader against Lackawanna College starting at noon.
