Wagner Effort Highlights Wolfpack DH vs. #20 Lackawanna
YOUNGWOOD, Pa. - First-year pitcher Jared Wagner threw a complete game and struck out eight in the nightcap of Westmoreland County Community College's home doubleheader Friday, but 20th-ranked Lackawanna College used late runs to pull away for a 5-1 victory.
The Falcons' win made it a sweep for the visitors Friday, as they scored a 15-7 triumph in the opening game over the Wolfpack.
Wagner posted three punchouts in putting up a pair of zeroes to start the game, but Lackawanna broke a scoreless tie with a two-run homer in the third inning. The Falcons threatened again in the fourth with a leadoff single, but Wagner picked the runner off and then recorded a strikeout. The next two batters reached, but a fielder's choice stranded both.
The Wolfpack sliced into their deficit in the bottom of the fourth when Matt Wicker doubled off the wall in left-center and Reid Amundson dropped a single into left field for an RBI to make it a 2-1 Falcon lead. Wagner held Lackawanna scoreless in the fifth, but the Falcons added key insurance runs in the sixth with a solo homer and two more in the seventh to take their lead to 5-1 and the Wolfpack could not mount a final comeback.
Wagner posted his second complete game of the year with five runs allowed on nine hits and matched his season-best with eight Ks.
In the opening game, Lackawanna built a 7-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth before Westmoreland got in the scoring column on an RBI single by Sebastien Nelson and a two-run single by Wicker. The Falcons put the game away by erupting for eight runs in the seventh inning, although the Wolfpack did plate four runs before the final out was recorded. Tommy Kegerreis doubled in a pair, which was followed by RBI singles from Dom Koch and Amundson.
Westmoreland finished the first game with 10 hits at the plate, including two each, as well as two RBIs apiece, for Wicker and Kegerreis.
The Wolfpack are scheduled to travel to Lackawanna to take on the nationally-ranked Falcons again on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 1 pm.
