Allegany Takes Two from Wolfpack
YOUNGWOOD, Pa. - Although the Westmoreland County Community College baseball team had rallies in both games of Thursday's twinbill with Allegany, the Trojans used late runs to pull away for 8-5 and 12-9 victories over the Wolfpack.
In game one, Allegany took the lead with a two-run homer in the first and scored another run in the third to build a 3-0 advantage. Westmoreland mounted a three-run rally in the bottom of the third, which began when Tanner Orndorff stroked a leadoff triple and later scored on a wild pitch. That was followed by an RBI single from Matt Wicker and an RBI double from Dom Koch to even the score at 3-3.
Following a scoreless fourth frame, the Trojans took the lead for good in the fifth with one run and then added three in the sixth and another in the seventh. The Wolfpack tried to come back, scoring runs in the seventh when Tommy Kegerreis belted an RBI double and Koch brought one in with a sacrifice fly, but that was as close as Westmoreland would get.
Wicker led the bats with three hits, while Sebastien Nelson and Kegerreis had two each and Koch drove in a pair in the setback. The Wolfpack starter on the mound was Damian Serralta, who struck out nine in 5 2/3 innings of work.
Game two looked like it might be a runaway when Allegany pushed seven runs across in the first inning. After that initial outburst, Westmoreland brought in Josh Krise from the bullpen and he settled things down, holding the visitors scoreless over the next three innings.
That allowed the Wolfpack to come back. The first run scored in the third inning with a run-scoring single from Koch. The flood gates burst open in the fourth inning when Westmoreland struck for seven runs. Big hits came from Blake Fairman with an RBI single, a two-run double from Kegerreis and an RBI triple by Koch, while Ray Haalahurich executed a squeeze for an RBI and two runs came across on passed balls.
Miscues plagued the Wolfpack in the fifth inning, as a passed ball brought the tying run home and after an error allowed two more to score, Allegany regained the lead 10-8. Westmoreland sliced the defict by a run when Koch's big day continued with an RBI single, but the Trojans secured the win with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings for a 12-9 final tally.
Kosh finished the doubleheader with five RBIs in all after he went 3-for-4 and drove in three in the second game. Kegerreis also had a pair of hits, two RBIs and scored twice and Kameron Pritts stroked a double for the Wolfpack's other extra-base hit. Krise turned in a solid performance on the mound, throwing four innings and allowing three unearned runs while striking out two and walking two.
Westmoreland remains at home for its next outing, as they host Potomac State Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 12 pm.
