Wolfpack Take on Division I Potomac State
YOUNGWOOD, Pa. - The Westmoreland County Community College baseball team continued its tour of games against NJCAA scholarship programs Saturday afternoon by hosting Division I Potomac State.
The Catamounts used a strong pitching effort from one of the top NJCAA arms in the country to post a 10-0 win in six innings in the opener before pulling away late for a 9-4 triumph in the second game over the Wolfpack.
In the first game, Westmoreland starter Logan Gustafson threw a pair of scoreless innings to start before Potomac plated four runs in the third inning and another in the fourth. The Catamounts put the game away with five in the sixth inning to end the game early.
Westmoreland managed four hits in the game, including a pair of singles by Tommy Kegerreis, a triple by Reid Admundson and a single by Matt Henderson. But the Wolfpack bats were held in check by Catamount lefty Brandon Schaeffer, who lowered his ERA to 0.28, the best in the country, with the shutout.
In game two, Potomac scored a run in the first but that was answered in the second when Westmoreland's Ray Halahurich laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to bring in a run. The teams exchanged runs again when Potomac scored in the third, but the Wolfpack drew even in the bottom of that inning on an RBI ground out by Noah Sweeney.
The Catamounts took the lead for good in the fourth inning with three runs and added on four more later in the game. Westmoreland's Henderson collected RBIs to close out their scoring, as he drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth and drove in one on a fielder's choice in the seventh.
The Wolfpack matched their opponents with nine hits in game two, led by a 3-for-3 effort from Amundson, while Sweeney and Halahurich had two each each. On the mound, Blake Fairman started and threw the opening five innings, while John Gennaro pitched the final two frames.
Westmoreland is right back on the field tomorrow, as they will host NJCAA Division II foe CCBC-Catonsville in a doubleheader starting at 12 pm.
