Garrett Takes Two from Wolfpack
MCHENRY, Md. - Shortstop Matt Wicker went 6-for-7 at the plate in Monday's doubleheader, but the Westmoreland County Community College baseball team dropped 9-2 and 7-1 decisions to Garrett College.
In game one, the Lakers jumped out quickly, plating one run in the first inning and seven more in the second inning to build an 8-0 lead. Westmoreland managed their runs in the fifth when Wicker ripped a two-run single to right field to bring home Tanner Orndorff and Blake Fairman. Garrett would complete the scoring with another run in the sixth for a 9-2 triumph.
Wicker collected four of the Wolfpack's seven hits in the contest. In addition to his run-prodicing single, Wicker belted two doubles and a triple. Orndorff also had a pair of singles and Reid Amundson had a hit as well. Taking the start on the mound was Logan Gustafson, who allowed nine runs, but due to five Westmoreland errors, only one was earned.
The second game had a different beginning, as the Wolfpack scored first. In the top of the first, consecutive singles by Wicker, Dom Koch and Amundson loaded the bases and Sebastien Nelson worked a walk to bring home Wicker for a 1-0 Westmoreland advantage.
The Lakers drew even in the last of the first with their own bases-loaded walk. The home team grabbed the lead with a pair of runs in the third and four more in the fourth frame to finish the scoring. The Wolfpack finished the second game with six hits, all singles, including a pair from Wicker to finish his 6-for-7 afternoon.
Westmoreland is now off until Sunday when they will host Kent State-Tuscarawas in a doubleheader starting at noon. The Wolfpack swept Tuscarawas back on April 3 by scores of 12-2 and 19-8.
