Tuesday afternoon, saw an offensive explosion for the Westmoreland County Community College baseball team. They scored a combined 37 runs in their doubleheader sweep of Region 20 opponent CCBC Catonsville. The Wolfpack took game one 16-8, and then proceeded to take game two 21-4.
Westmoreland racked up 12 hits in game one against the Cardinals. The Wolfpack jumped out to an early lead in the top of the 1st inning on a Darren DeRiggi sac fly, scoring their first run. Westmoreland then scored two more runs on a throwing error, followed by freshman Tyler Martin's single, which scored another run. Later in the 6th inning freshman Sean Franzi hit a solo home run over the right field fence, his first of three home runs on the day. Westmoreland would then go on to add 4 more runs in the seventh inning to make their lead 16-7. Freshman Jake Domkowski homered to right field, driving in two runs as part of that 6th inning. The Wolfpack had 12 hits in the game Martin and Owen Saiani each had 3 hits each. Also, Darren DeRiggi added a hit with an RBI, and Jake Gedekoh, Tyler Skaggs, and Owen Dumbroski each added a hit as well.
Jacob Kitz (4-2) started for the Wolfpack on the mound and gave up 7 hits and 4 earned runs over his 5 innings of work. Kitz went on to strike out 3 batters while walking no one. Owen Dumbroski and Owen Saiani saw their first appearance on the mound this season for the Wolfpack. Both allowed just one hit with Dumbroski striking out 1, and Saiani striking out 2 batters.
Game two saw the Wolfpack top their run, and hit total, from game one. Westmoreland collected 21 runs on 16 hits in game 2's 21-4 Region 20 win.
In game two the offense was fueled Sean Franzi's two home runs, and 6 RBI performance. Sean homered in the first inning, a grand slam, and in the fourth inning, a 2-run home run. Westmoreland took a 9-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning, and never looked back. The Wolfpack scored 2 runs off an error, followed by Owen Saiani's RBI single. Next came Owen Dumbroski with a 2 RBI single, and they finished the first inning scoring on Franzi's grand slam. Dumbroski and DeRiggi each tallied 3 hits apiece. Saiani, Jake Domkowski, and Franzi had 2 hits each. While Wyatt Nehls, Tyler Martin, Noah Matson, and Landon Martin each had 1 hit each. DeRiggi and Dumbroski each had 4 RBI's as well.
Tyler Skaggs was awarded the win for his 3 innings of work, allowing 2 hits, and 1 run in his performance. Skaggs struck out 3 and walked 4 batters. Riley Smith came in to pitch the final 2 innings for the Wolfpack. Riley allowed 1 hit, and three runs, 1 earned, in his 2 innings of work.
With these wins, the Wolfpack move to 23-14 on the season and into 7th place in the Region 20. Next up for the Wolfpack will be a trip to Frederick Community College to play a single 9 inning game, before wrapping up the regular season this Saturday and Sunday with back to back Region 20 doubleheaders against Montgomery and Chesapeake.
