Wolfpack Battle Again Versus Penn Highlands
YOUNGWOOD, Pa. - The Westmoreland County Community College volleyball team took on Penn Highlands for the third time in six days Thursday night and although the Wolfpack battled throughout, the Black Bears came away with a 3-0 victory.
The opening set was the closest of the night, as a couple early spurts helped push Penn Highlands to a 21-12 lead. Solid serving from Westmoreland's Morgan Brown helped the home team score five straight to pull within 21-17, but that was as close as the Wolfpack would get and the Black Bears scored a 25-21 decision.
The visitors controlled the second set and went ahead 2-0 with a 25-12 win. In the third set, the lead went back and forth through the early portion and stayed close throughout. Westmoreland was within three at 19-16 before PH ripped off five in a row to seize control and they took the third set 25-18 to complete the victory.
Jessica Williams was solid up front again for the Wolfpack with a team-high nine kills and five blocks. Haley Maines and Samantha Duncan both had four kills and Duncan also passed off five assists, while Brown led the team with nine assists and also served four aces.
The Westmoreland-Penn Highlands series continues on Saturday in Youngwood as part of a tri-match. The Wolfpack and Black Bears will start the day at 9 am with a match, which will be followed by Penn Highlands playing Kent State-Tuscarawas at 11 am. The final match of the day will pit Westmoreland against Tuscarawas at 1 pm.
